Walmart.com has hundreds of employees, contractors, and outside agencies, who contribute to the on-going development of Walmart’s Web site, one of the world’s largest e-commerce sites. Walmart.com wanted a style guide available to all contributors so that standards could be easily accessed, updated, and enforced and where designs and code elements could be re-used.
Native Instinct interviewed representatives from all disciplines in the creative and production process to understand Walmart.com’s process, identify roadblocks, and create an efficient online solution. We then designed and built an extranet site that enabled Walmart.com staff and contractors to view and share templates and other items for their site. We used Wordpress, an open source blogging tool, as the back-end infrastructure for Walmart’s style guide. This enabled users to easily find, navigate, and view existing templates rather than browse through an operating file structure. Staff and contractors are using the Cross Functional Style Guide to increase efficiency and improve the use of standard styles across Walmart.com.
